Here’s a throwback for you. As much as Rare Frequency loves our electronic-leaning, over-the-top experimental beats, there’s always time for a straight vinyl-wrecking, break-chopping hip hop beat tape. Skatter Brain Fokus is exactly that. It’s a one-take rendition of unquantized beats created with “little editing”, which would lead one to believe that it might sound sloppy and choppy, which it does, but in all the right ways. Much as the cover art might suggest, it’s a collage of scratchy samples, breaks and ideas that in most cases begin in utter havoc only to eventually sort themselves out. When the beats reach clarity the results are head-nodder after neck-snapper, with grooves aplenty and lots of sounds saturating the headspace. The snippets are wonderfully chosen and the arrangements are ramshackle and wonderful, making the idea that these were created with very little time or post-production both believable and intimidating. 5iLL makes something that some producers take special care to create look like an afterthought (or not a thought at all). Check out 5iLL and the rest of his United States of Mind family, who are bringing a fresh viewpoint to the Detroit hip hop landscape.

The story behind this album is its a collection of beats 5iLL created over a 4 year period and never had intentions on releasing. Best friend Sleepy Biggs compiles, mixes and releases them for the whole world to enjoy. Thank God he did. This collection is soooooooo dope! iLL’s production style is very similar to his rhyme style, very unorthodox and of course this is a good thing. Actually a great thing. I find myself constantly pointing out the amount B.S. people put out these days because its so prevalent. This project right here is what real hip-hop heads need in there life. Very reminiscent of the mid to late 90′s but also has a 2000+ flavor to it that I’m sure even the most avid fan of Crunk, Trap, Block and Snap Rap could appreciate. I mean that!
